Lombrum (Manus Island - PNG) Marine Infrastructure Project

MANUS ISLAND, PNG – Pacific Marine Group (PMG) is pleased to announce the successful delivery of the Marine works package at the Lombrum Naval Base redevelopment project on Manus Island, Papua New Guinea. The marine works are a major initial enabler for the ongoing work at Lombrum that will build the PNGDF’s capability to protect its borders and maritime resources and is part of a joint initiative between the Australian and PNG governments. This significant milestone was achieved in collaboration with Clough Niugini as the main contractor.

Key Project Highlights:

PMG, as a subcontractor to Clough Niugini, undertook various crucial marine works to enhance the infrastructure of the Lombrum Naval Base. The scope of the project included:

  1. Shipwreck Removal:
    • Successfully removed a shipwreck from the nearshore waters of the Naval facility and relocated it to a designated onshore area.
  2. LCT Marine Facility Construction:
    • Completed the construction of the LCT Marine Facility, comprising the LCT low ramp, LCT high ramp, LCT dolphins, and walkways.
  3. Fender Piles and Underslung Services:
    • Removed existing fender piles and underslung services of the existing finger jetty.
    • Installed replacement fender piles and service support brackets.
  4. LCT Area Development:
    • Drove large diameter steel piles to varying depths
    • Supplied and installed precast concrete elements. All precast elements were built on site at our marine facility in Townsville and transported by PMG barges to site.
    • Completed formwork, reinforcement, and pouring of in-situ concrete.
    • Supplied and installed fender systems, walkways, rope guards, guardrails, and other furniture.

Logistics and Project Timeline:

PMG mobilised two barges (PMG181 and PMG183W) equipped with 100t and 280t crawler cranes, piling equipment, precast units, falsework, formwork and steel furniture from our yard in Townsville to Manus Island in May 2023, with the Marine works package successfully completed and handed over in January 2024. The barges were tandem towed internationally using our tug PMG Emerald.

Safety and Community Engagement:

The project was executed with a strong emphasis on safety, achieving a high level of quality without any lost time injuries. While community engagement was primarily managed by the main contractor, Clough Niugini, PMG maintained relationships with local companies, including Pacific Towing, Arman Larmer Surveyors and JDMS Civil Engineering.

Local Employment and Training:

PMG employed 37 PNG nationals, including 6 Manusians, over the course of the project. These covered various roles including engineers, divers, surveyors, crane operators,  boilermakers, fitters, riggers, labourers, and concrete trades.  At Pacific Marine Group we pride ourselves in building relationships and upskilling PNG nationals and are looking to continue to expand our operations in Papua New Guinea and continue to build a local marine construction skill base.

Acknowledgments:

Pacific Marine Group is proud to have played a crucial role in delivering the marine works package, contributing to the development of Manus Island. We extend our gratitude to the PNG national employees, subcontractors, Clough project team and service providers who collaborated seamlessly to achieve the project's success.
