PMG have recently returned from another interesting project on the Great Barrier Reef.
The weather station tower at Myrmidon Reef is owned and operated by AIMS, and provides a stable space for sensors that contribute to the AIMS weather station program.
During a recent cyclone generated high wave event, the tower was pushed over off vertical. PMG’s job was to fabricate a new bottom half of the tower in our workshop, have it galvanised, then load this onto a crane barge and mobilise to site.
Onboard were a PMG commercial dive team, as well as a topside cranebarge crew and marine crew.
Once on site the barge was positioned alongside the tower at high tide and we then lifted the old tower onboard the barge and retreated to deep water to commence the repairs. Onboard the barge we replaced the bottom (damaged) section, and modified the feet to allow more ballast weights to be installed. Once all the modifications were complete, we manoeuvred the barge back into position at high tide, gently placed the tower back on the seabed guided in by divers, levelled it, and divers then installed double the amount of ballast weight that it had before.
